Katy, Texas

Katy is a city located in Fort Bend, Harris, and Waller Counties west of Houston, Texas along Interstate 10. Part of the Houston–The Woodlands–Sugar Land metropolitan area, the city's population was 21,894 at the 2020 US Census.

Incorporated in 1945, Katy's name derived from the former Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad (commonly referred to as the M-K-T or "Katy" Railroad) that ran through the city in the 19th century. Katy was once known as Cane Island, believed to be from the fact that the area was a major sugar cane and rice producer.

Local residents often split the city into two informal sections: "Old Katy" and "the Katy Area". Old Katy is the actual city limits and lies mostly north of Interstate 10. The "Katy area" is made up of large sections of unincorporated Harris and Fort Bend counties and lies mostly to the east and southeast of the city limits (both areas are within the Katy Independent School District).
